Artists in Dialogue: Xingzi Gu, Paul Chan & Hanna Li

Join us on Saturday, September 19 at 1 pm for an Artists in Dialogue at Make Room, bringing together painter Xingzi Gu, architect Paul Chan and interior designer Hanna Li. The conversation takes place during Gu's solo exhibition Periphery Dreaming and the group exhibition Tête-bêche, both on view through October 10. All three grew up in mainland China or Hong Kong and built their practices in the United States. The discussion will explore what remains of the golden era of Hong Kong cinema and Japanese film in the work they make now: a remembered room, a film still, a gesture carried from one place to another. Gu's paintings hold figures in a state of waiting, with memories that shift each time they are recalled. Chan's Domestic Ritual furniture, on view in Tête-bêche, is built for a life that moves between rooms. Li's interiors draw on a family lineage of woodworkers and a childhood rhythm she still designs toward. Together they will talk about what these inherited images become once they arrive somewhere new, and what each of their disciplines can do with them. Xingzi Gu (b. 1995, Jiangsu) lives and works in New York. Their layered paintings stage coming-of-age experiences shaped by desire, disassembly and displacement. Paul Chan is the founder of Studio Paul Chan, a Los Angeles architecture and design practice. Born in Hong Kong, he creates spaces and objects that balance the rational and the poetic. Hanna Li is the founder and creative director of Hanna Li Interiors, Los Angeles. Her work has been featured in Architectural Digest, Vogue and Elle Decor. Free and open to the public.
